Books of Historical Interest and Importance About Typography
- The Printers Guide, or an Introduction to the Art of Printing, C. S. Van Winkle. This book is generally considered to be the oldest American-published book about printing and typography.
- The Practice of Typography, Theodore Low De Vinne, 1901.
- The Art of Spacing: A Treatise on the Proper Distribution of White Space in Typography, Samuel A. Bartels, 1927. This book is probably responsible for the use of only one space after such major punctuation marks as the period, question mark, and exclamation point. Before publication of this book, most typesetters had used two spaces (or a so-called em quad). See pages 29 to 31.
- Specimens of Printing Types, published by the American Type Founders, 1897. This book not only contains numerous examples of typefaces from the late 19th century, but the examples are quite entertaining to read.
- American Specimen Book of Type Styles, American Type Founders Company, 1912.
- Types of the De Vinne Press, 1907.
