Effective Listening
Length
15 hours; five 3-hour meetings, or two all-day meetings.
Description
Ineffective listening and poor memory become habitual behavior in most adults. The reasons for this are many, and the instructor will explain some of them. However, the purpose of the course is not to focus on the causes of the problem, but instead to point students toward the cure.
There are five components that make up effective listening:
- Attending.
- Understanding.
- Remembering.
- Applying.
- Responding appropriately.
Therefore, the objectives of the course are to help students improve in all five of these areas.
Method
The governing principle in this course is the principle of immediate application. Discussions in technique are followed immediately by classroom exercises that will enable students to practice what they have learned.
